KOICA organizes one day seminar on Provision of Safe Drinking Water Supply Schemes in Punjab

img_480420th June 2014 – Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Pakistan organized a one day seminar at a local hotel in Lahore on “Provision of safe drinking water supply schemes in Punjab”. The event was attended by a large number of scholars, community workers, common man, and KOICA’s staff. The Director General KOICA Pakistan, Mr. Sung Choon Ki welcomed the guests and said that your presence is a great source of encouragement and motivation. He appreciated the KOICA alumni, scholars and other guests for attending the event. Mr. Sung then opened the floor for active discussion on how to improve the water supply schemes through people’s participation in rural areas of Pakistan.

One of the speakers of the event, Mr. Salman Yousaf Deputy Secretary (Tech), Housing Urban Development & Public Health Engineering Department Punjab said that projects like these will help the locals improve their water and sanitation condition and get rid of the water borne diseases which causes infant deaths. Professor Sajjad H. Sheikh, UET Lahore also attended the event. He said that involvement of community in the planning, designing and construction phase is important as it gives them a sense of ownership and results in sustainability. He further discussed the operation and maintenance part that is critical for any project to be successful.


KOICA Project completion ceremony for Provision of Safe Drinking Water Supply Schemes in Punjab

img_452319th June 2014 – Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Pakistan celebrated its project completion at a ceremony organized at Dhal Bumbli Village Tehsil Phalia, District Mandibahuddin.

The ceremony started with men dancing in cultural dresses and traditional Pakistani horse dancing on drum beats. His Excellence, the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Prof. Dr. Song Jong-Hwan along with Director General KOICA, Honorable Mr. Sung Choon Ki attended the ceremony. From Pakistan’s side, Honorable Mr. Tanveer Aslam Awan, Provisional Minister for Housing Urban Development & Public Health Engineering Department Punjab, Honorable Ms. Hameeda Waheed-ud-din, Provisional Minister for Women Development joined the ceremony.

H.E Mr. Song said that last year Korea celebrated 30 years of diplomatic ties with Islamic Republic of Pakistan and year 2014 is proving to be significant year for bilateral trade with Prime Minister of Korea’s visit making the relationship stronger and deeper. He further said that Republic of Korea and its people will never forget the support from Pakistani brothers during the Korean War and their assistance in developing socio-economic plan. He assured that Korea will continually support and incorporate Korea’s development experience in Pakistan. He also focused on the “WE can do” spirit!


KOICA organizes capacity building and awareness trainings on Water and Sanitation in Mandi Bahuddin

KOICA_Mandi_Bahuddin_Training_ProgramKOICA Pakistan starts a 10 day Capacity Building and Awareness Training on Water and Sanitation in different villages of Mandi Bahuddin. These trainings will not only target the community level organizations and individuals, but also school teachers and students to make it more effective. KOICA has hired the expertise of Institute of Rural Management (IRM) for this purpose. IRM along with its trainers and KOICA staff is targeting 14 villages and 44 schools.

In collaboration with the Government of Punjab, KOICA aims to make development interventions in terms of provision of safe drinking water to the rural community of district Phalia, Mandi Bahaudin. The need actually arises as the effluent of Phalia Colony Sugar Mill flows into the water body of near villages that eventually has made the drinking water adversely contaminated and thus unfit for drinking purpose. This initiative was aimed at increasing the water supply and sanitation coverage, improving of drinking water quality standards and its sustainability through improving public hygiene and capacity building of CBOs and local community on water resource and safe drinking water practices.
